From high-speed car chases and explosive fight scenes to precision falls and daring fire burns, stunt performers are responsible for some of the most memorable moments in film and television.

Yet while audiences celebrate the spectacle, the skilled professionals who bring these sequences to life often remain in the shadows.

In South Africa, a growing movement is working to change that. 

The Saffa Stunt Awards was created to advocate for stunt professionals and to recognise the extraordinary skill, discipline and risk involved in action performance and coordination. By honouring excellence within the stunt community, these awards strive to elevate the craft and emphasise the crucial role that stunt performers play in the success of film and television productions, while promoting enhanced professional recognition within the industry.

Now entering its second year, the Saffa Stunt Awards continue to build momentum within the local industry. The upcoming ceremony will take place on 9 May 2026 at the Avalon Theatre at the Homecoming Centre, bringing together stunt performers, coordinators, filmmakers and industry professionals for an evening dedicated to action filmmaking.

Submissions for the awards are open, with details available on the Saffa Stunt Awards website. Categories include Best Fight Performance, Best Fight Choreography, Best Stunt Coordinator, Best Showreel, Best Stunt Rigging, Best Speciality Stunt, Best Male/Female performer, Hardest Hit, Best Action Short, Stunt Star to Watch, Best Special Effects.

These categories recognise both individual excellence and the collaborative effort required to design and execute complex action sequences.

While the awards recognise stunt crew, they invite the wider film industry to join the celebration – by attending the ceremony, supporting the initiative, and help bring greater recognition to the craftsman behind the action genre.
