IMPORTANT SOUTH AFRICAN FILM & TV INCENTIVE STUDY TO LAUNCH AT JBX

A report on the Economic Impact Assessment of the South African Film and Television Production Incentive will be launched at the Joburg Xchange (JBX), the industry hub of the Joburg Film Festival (JFF), taking place at the Sandton Convention Centre from 4–6 March 2026.

Following protests over the Department of Trade and Industry’s handling of the incentive programme in February last year, industry leader Olsberg SPI has spent the past year compiling data, interviewing respondents, and refining this report into a comprehensive toolbox of information spanning the last ten years, demonstrating the industry’s economic contribution.

The session, titled Assessing the Value of the South African Film and TV Incentive Programme, will take place at JBX on 4 March from 11:00 am to 11:50 am. It will present this important economic impact assessment of SA’s DTIC incentive schemes, commissioned by the Independent Producers Organisation (IPO) and supported by the Gauteng Film Commission, Industrial Development Corporation, and Netflix.

Panellists include Luke Rous, Kagisho Bapela, Mak Mogoba, Delon Bakker, and Leon Forde, with the session moderated by Unathi Malunga.

Bringing together the study’s sponsors and key industry stakeholders, the panel will highlight the report’s key findings, assess the tangible economic and industry-wide benefits generated by the incentive scheme, and examine how policy implementation has influenced production activity, investor confidence, and South Africa’s position in the global screen marketplace.

Amid an increasingly competitive international production environment, the discussion will explore how the current incentive framework can be refined and strengthened. It will spotlight practical, industry-driven proposals to enhance policy certainty, unlock consistent investment, and foster a stable, competitive foundation for sustained growth in the screen sector.
