TRUMP RENEWS THREAT TO IMPOSE 100% TARIFF ON MOVIES MADE OUTSIDE UNITED STATES
President Donald Trump said on Monday he would impose a 100% tariff on all films produced overseas that are then sent into the United States, repeating a threat made in May.
Trump said on his Truth Social platform: “”Our movie making business has been stolen from the United States of America, by other Countries, just like stealing ‘candy from a baby,'” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “California, with its weak and incompetent Governor, has been particularly hard hit! Therefore, in order to solve this long time, never ending problem, I will be imposing a 100% Tariff on any and all movies that are made outside of the United States. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
It was not immediately clear what legal authority Trump would use to impose the tariff or when and how the tariffs would be implemented.
Studio executives told Reuters earlier this year that they were “flummoxed” by how the tariff would be enforced, given that filmmakers often use production, financing, post-production and visual effects spread across multiple countries.
After the announcement in May, a coalition of American film unions and guilds sent a letter to Trump, urging him to support tax incentives for domestic film production.
