ACCLAIMED SA ACTOR CONNIE CHIUME DIES AT 72

Award-winning South African actress Connie Chiume has passed away at the age of 72. She died on Tuesday at Garden City Hospital, as confirmed by her family in a heartfelt statement shared on her verified Instagram account.

“The Chiume family regrets to inform you of the passing of the internationally acclaimed, award-winning actress Connie Chiume,” the statement read.

Chiume first rose to prominence in 1989 with her role in the beloved TV series Inkom’ Edla Yodwa. She was best known for her portrayal of Mamokete “Kete” Khuse in the popular e.tv soap opera Rhythm City. Her impressive career also included appearances in notable shows such as Zone 14, Soul City, Mazinyo Dot Q, and Gomora.

In addition to her television work, Chiume gained international recognition for her roles in the Marvel film Black Panther (2018) and Beyoncé’s Black Is King (2020).

The beloved actress, who won three South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) awards in her career, was awarded a Lifetime Achiever Award during the SAFTAs ceremony in 2022, acknowledging and celebrating her brilliance and dedication to her craft.

Black Panther co-star Winston Duke paid tribute to the actress saying on Twitter: “Rest in peace my beautiful sister Connie Chiume. Thank you for the resilience and always inspired, present work you delivered in your long illustrious career. You always possessed gratitude and a generous, bold heart. We’ll miss you and are grateful for your time here. Safe travels on your continued journey.🙏🏾”

The South African government also paid their respects, saying: “Our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of multi-award winning and legendary actress Connie Chiume. Her outstanding work will always be remembered. 💔🕊️”
